I agree with most of what you've said, but will call out two things.

1. The need for some kind of technical screening becomes apparent the first time you hire someone who interviewed well but can't code their way out of a paper bag. I've seen this happen enough that even though I despise tech interviews, I understand their necessity.

2. There are about another 100 things that make our industry toxic, so this list might be too short. This industry eats people alive -- even the successful ones. I would never recommend to my children that they follow in my footsteps.
